I’m back! And I have a little treat for you. (Well, really it is a treat for me, but let’s not bother ourselves with technicalities.)
I finished my Little Birds Pullover:
For those of you that haven’t been following my Little Birds adventures, first, where have you been? and second, here is a brief recap. I fell in love with Ysloda’s Little Birds pattern the minute I set eyes on the first issue of the Twist Collective. The only hesitation I had with the sweater was the cut of the cardigan. While I love the way it looks on the model, I was fairly certain that it would not be a flattering look on my more curvy self. But the birds! I couldn’t get those birds out of my head. I loved them. So I set about to make a Pullover version using Ysloda’s pattern as my start.
I quickly decided on two features I wanted, scoop neck and elbow sleeves. With a bit of help from Eunny’s Autumn Rose Cardigan pattern for the scoop and my own wrangling of sizing and style for the rest I was able to work up my version of Little Birds.
Tweet, Tweet.
So what can I say? I really really love it. Normally I am highly critical of my finished knits. I am rarely pleased when I try something on–particularly for the first time. Often I talk myself into liking something once I get over my preconceived notion of what I wanted it to look like. Not so with Little Birds. The minute I put it on I smiled. I might have even done a little dance. I was just so nervous it wasn’t going to work out–that my patchwork pattern was not going to look right. But it did, and in the process I learned a LOT about sweater design and fit.
Lots of Little Birds.
Of course, there is one thing. (Isn’t there always?) Were I to do it again, I would make the scoop a little less wide and deep. It would be nice to not have to wear something underneath. But that is really just nit-picky.
Stats:
Pattern: Little Birds (My own pullover version) rav link here
Source: Twist Collective
Needles: US 1 & 2 Addi-Turbos
Yarn: Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift
Mods: Made into a pullover, made longer by adding a couple repeats of the birds, elbow sleeves…in other words, lots and lots.
So there you go. A Little Birds Pullover. Excuse me now while I go skip in the park and smell wildflowers.
It looks really fabulous – great mods to make it just right for you
Erin, I LOVE it. I have to say, a long time ago when first reading about this pattern I may have been, shall we say, a little skeptical, but it is fabulous!
It’s marvellous! I really love it. The fit is *perfect* and it looks really great on you. I bet it feels really good to have made so many changes to it and basically designed a very large part of it yourself – as you say, a real learning experience, and you’re now all empowered for the future! Yay. Enjoy wearing it!
You are so clever at adapting things! That is the cutest sweater!
It’s fantastic – I LOVE it!!
What a wonderful sweater! Congrats on successfully modifying it to be what you wanted. That will be a fun sweater to wear for a long time!
It is YOU! Love your modifications and the fit. Excellent job. Wear it well!!
Such determination! A great sweater…
Wow – it looks absolutely fantastic! Well done!
Fan-freakin-tastic!
I am in awe of how you made that totally your own, and the fit is spot on. Great job!
wow erin! i love it!
Birds everywhere are doing a little dance with you! Great job!
This is beyond perfect — it’s a spectacular example of how knitting can allow us to have exactly the garments we want — doesn’t happen so often for the rest of us who aren’t as clever with the mods, but it’s really inspiring.
And I have to disagree about the scoop neck — altho’ it might be a pain to always have to find something to wear underneath, I think that the depth and width of that scoop balances other details beautifully. Congrats on a gorgeous FO, well done!
Fab. U. Lous. You are my knitting hero, and always will be. Now can tell me how to knit myself one? Puh-lease?!
It’s beautiful! Way to go!
It looks great – your mods are wonderful. They actually make me more interested in knitting this sweater, as I know the cardigan style wouldn’t look good on me. Great job!
Erin, it’s gorgeous! I love it, and the colors look great on you!
Well done on making a sweater that you love and that fits you perfectly. I actually like the scoop the way it is. Enjoy it!

I am doing a little dance for you, too! The sweater looks great. I love the birds and the fit is awesome. Something about fall makes me miss my hallstrom girls even more.
holy cow – that turned out awesome!! i might have to copy-cat you… your pullover version / style would be much more flattering on me than the cardigan version as well. it’s perfect on you – great job!!
Oh, it is simply darling! I am so impressed! The birds are so fun and I love the modifications you made. How wonderful to have made something that is entirely your own. This was definitley a treat for us too.

First of all… who gets 45 comments on a blog entry, secondly – you are a genius, and I know nothing about knitting, but your little birds make me want to know something. You rule.
Candice
Wow wow wow! It is perfect, and perfect for you! Seems a much more wearable garment. How many people have stopped you in the street to ooo and ahhh? 🙂 You may even have inspired me to knit something again…
this is positively one of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen! this actually makes me want to knit…more than a scarf… maybe (grin).
I can’t stand how cute this is…how cute you are…
congrats! it looks gorgeous–i love it as a pullover.
I also loved the Little Birds pattern when I saw it in Twist but knew it wouldn’t be a good style for me. I’m so glad you shared your version!!! It is so adorable! I love how you were able to keep the vintage/modern twist from the original even in a different cut! I think it’s the short sleeves that really do it for me.
I can’t wait to copy your changes when I make my own!
Wow, this is awesome! Much better than the original.
I think love and envy are what I’m feeling for your sweater! I’ve got this in the queue, and already have the yarn, but I am beyond intimidated in actually making it.
Congratulations on a gorgeous and flattering sweater.
