I am a generally likeable person, I think. People usually like me okay. Kara is nice too–not as nice as me but very, very nice. We smile at the neighbors, keep a clean yard, and would for sure go to town meetings or something if there were any. We are good neighbors.
So why when I stepped out of my house this morning was there a carton worth of eggs on my driveway and garage door? Who does this? I realized it must have happened in the morning because the eggs were pretty fresh. Also, while I was sleeping I awoke to a noise and thought it was Kara up early. But then she woke up after I did. So tell me, what angry or stupid youth gets up in the morning to egg my house? (I realize I am being judgmental with the whole “youth” assumption–if proven wrong I will stand corrected)
And why my house? I don’t have any enemies as far as I can tell. Then I realized that the mini grill I had in my backyard was gone. The squrty spouty thing for the garden hose…gone. So not only do I have a vandal on my hands but a thief. Then I started thinking back…
In the last few months I have found all kinds of random things in my yard. Crushed soda cans, a soup can shot up with what seemed to be a bebe gun, and some other random garbage. I wrote it off since it happened infrequently. I almost forgot about one night several months ago when I was home alone at 12:30 am, downstairs watching TV and knitting when the doorbell rang. I didn’t answer it, obviously, but soon after the ring the most uneartly screech rang out loudly and kept going for what was about a minute. It took me an hour to get up the courage to go upstairs to bed. The next morning I discovered the firework on my front doorstep.
Perhaps I am being paranoid but maybe these random acts aren’t so random?
I feel violated and angry. If punk kids are targeting our house then I will get them. How? I don’t really know, but hear me now, I will. What will I do when I catch them? Couldn’t really tell you. All I really want to know from them is…why me?

I’m so sorry that you have crappy people who live near you and are just being mean. They are probably doing this b/c you are two single women, I hate to say that but its probably the truth. You could set up a webcam if you have a window by your door and catch people bothering you, or you could call the police and let them know whats going on and ask them to drive by at night. I hope you don’t have anymore problems.
PS hows Glee coming? I’m going to rip mine this weekend.
I say stud your grass with dpns and lay out a trap of black sock yarn so they’ll get all tangled in it!
Whoever it is, they must be stopped. I suggest calling the police–and tell them all, especially about the doorbell ringing and the firecracker that act alone could have hurt someone very badly.
Oh My God! I can’t believe that. Maybe you should ask your neighbours and see if they had similar things happen to their house.
I recently discovered your blog and think you are a very talented knitter. I once had to park my car on the street, and it was egged and I felt the same sense of violation you described. (Not to mention it took forever to wash off.) It’s an awful feeling. I don’t know if your home is being targeted, but perhaps the people who did it continued because they didn’t suffer any consequences? At least so far… I hope you catch the culprits.
I have a tendency to think that Karen may be right — that whoever does these things has discovered that nothing happens to them when they do.
I have some friends who set up a motion-sensor camera with an alarm on it to monitor a lot of vandalism that was happening at the vacant house next door to them. One night the husband chased down a guy who was stealing a chair, which is not something I would recommend. But if you did that, you could at least know when someone is prowling around and either call someone or yell at them or blow a siren or something to scare them off.
It probably is kids. The firework and the eggs sure don’t sound like something an ill-intentioned adult would do.
Maybe you can hook up motion sensitive lights or a surveillance type camera so you can see who it is doing this stuff. It really is a bummer — hope you catch them and of course I can’t wait to find out what you do to them!
You should consider buying motion sensor lights, a dog, and/or a gun, depending on how you personally feel about lights, dogs, and guns…
It’s not right and I hope you can get to the bottom of the problem. Ask around the neighborhood. Maybe someone has seen the culprits.
I had a girlfriend once who lived in an apartment with three other girls out near the airport, and she was constantly telling me about creepy strangers on her doorstep trying to get in the apartment. I’m not saying this is your situation, but it does sound like *maybe* you’re being targeted because it’s just the two of you. I’d agree with the suggestion that you talk to your neighbors and call the police. You shouldn’t have to put up with that.
damn. I agree with everyone else. You should call the police and ask around the neighborhood. ((hugs)) be careful
Oh, yeah, call the police and ask for some monitoring. Ours will drive by periodically if requested…that would make you feel safer and perhaps send a signal to the creepy people who are doing this. The video cam is a good idea, too!
I agree with Amanda Cathleen. You should definately call the police. We had a similar incidents happen to us in our neighborhood but they eventually stopped because we called the police and saw the kids doing things. Calling the Police is the best thing you can do and you should tell them about everything. Don’t worry they will watch your house and catch those little punks.
how long have you lived there? Maybe the kids hated someone who USED to live there and haven’t the brains to realize that it’s someone else now.
That’s scary! Call the police next time… and talk to your neighbors to see if they saw anything weird.
i had my car egged once. in fact, the police came and woke us up. there were 4 other cars parked in the street that were egged. a block over, a car was keyed. thank god all i got as egged. that can be easily washed off. they’re just random acts done by bored kids. yes, i said it. kids. so all you need is to hose it down.
I’m with amanda (clothesknit) – inexpensive and easy to install
definately motion activated lights.. easy to install, buy at home depot.. get some BIG honking lightbulbs, and you’ll flood your yard with light when they even move close. Scare them with the light… I’m so sorry that you are having to deal with this. It’s very scarey.
I’m sorry to read that you have some crappy people trashing your house. I’ve had it happen before too, and it’s not fun to wake up to an egg covered car. I say borrow a friend’s mean dog and keep it chained up in the front yard a few nights a week. Heh.
